For childcare professionals, an Enhanced DBS check with a check of the children's barred list is required. This is the most thorough level of check available.

Most DBS checks are completed within 2-4 weeks. However, if there are any issues with your application or if the police need to conduct additional checks, it may take longer.

A DBS certificate has no official expiry date. However, most employers require a check to be less than 3 years old. With the DBS Update Service, your certificate stays current and can be checked online by employers.

The DBS Update Service is a subscription service (£13/year) that allows you to keep your DBS certificate up to date. Employers can check your status online instantly, meaning you don't need to apply for a new certificate each time you change jobs.

If you're registered with the DBS Update Service and your certificate is for the same type of work (child workforce), then yes, employers can check your status online. Otherwise, you'll need to apply for a new certificate.
